NHL Announces the Winter Classic and Heritage Classic

September 2, 2010

Although the NHL’s press conferences in Pittsburgh and Calgary were under the bright warm sun, thoughts were looking ahead to the ice cold hockey games now set to hit Heinz Field and McMahon Stadium in 2011.  BaAM was onsite in both Pittsburgh and Calgary this summer to set the stage (and turf) for the official announcements of the NHL’s outdoor games.

The press conference in Pittsburgh at the end of July confirmed what many had hoped to see:  the ultimate match-up, Crosby vs. Ovechkin.  Hockey fans were reassured that the Winter Classic will maintain its New Year's Day tradition, this time in the home of the Pittsburgh Steelers.  In addition to the podium highlights, the Pittsburgh press conference had such players as Sidney Crosby and Brooks Orpik aiming to shoot a field goal hockey-style (some actually made it).

In Calgary, only a week after the Pittsburgh announcement, the Heritage Classic was presented to the public.  The Heritage Classic will be the NHL’s second outdoor hockey game in 2011, to occur on February 20 at Calgary’s McMahon Stadium.  The Montreal Canadiens will face-off against the Calgary Flames at the first regular-season NHL outdoor game played in Canada since the Heritage Classic in 2003.
